[ How is this supposed to be cute and soft, there isn't an extra chair around so either the student sitting beside Rokkun excuses themselves to go to the bathroom and gets mauled by an invisible imp on the way and never comes back and frees up a seat, or Komaeda just walks in and sits down next to Rokkun on the same tiny chair so they're both half falling off of it and the teacher just stares at Komaeda for a moment before turning back to the board and continuing the lecture on optical physics. ]

so komaeda's a third-year now, easier than he expected, actually. we'll go for the student getting mauled by an imp so that komaeda can place his desk and chair right next to rokkun's so that they connect. talking is going to get them in trouble, so he knows their second best option which happens to be him opening a book, flipping to a clean page, and pulling out a pen to write something in his blocky handwriting. )

[ It's that last line that makes him smile, because of course this is for appearances, even if he's got Akira two classes over as a """friend""" and plenty of other kohai he makes a point to spoil and soccer teammates that must rely on him for one reason or another. Even if they're in the middle of class and literally everybody is in their own island except for him and Komaeda who's decided to push their desks together, nobody would have cared otherwise. ]

( actually, being in a room like this with others makes it easier for komaeda to be a little more carefree than per usual, he gets embarrassed when left alone with certain people. he does what he wants when he wants, but he can't pull his eyes away from the words on the sheet of paper. his hand reaches out, bending the corner of it as if he's thinking about what was said. if he gives into those memories that he doesn't even recall, accepts whatever rokkun says to him, he wonders if that's really called friendship — to be honest, he's the only native here that treats komaeda with some respect (derogatory), but that's because komaeda's not someone anyone wants to be around anyway. )

( he doesn't move his foot, instead he stares at the note trying to find the hidden meaning behind it. partners this, partners that... something that means a lot to him, and even komaeda picks up his pen to circle the word "partners," he draws an arrow from it where he writes "hope," circles that and an arrow extends to "us," where he stops, points at it and looks at the other. he draws half a circle over "us," and he seems to be waiting to see if rokkun will finish it, komaeda's mind works in mysterious ways. )

( he fails at being considerate of him, and his eyes look to rokkun, and then down to his hand. the anticipation makes him shiver, and he even laughs softly — not because he wants to laugh, but just a defense mechanism — that he clears his throat after. )

[ It's true. He's being disappointed at every turn, and in terms of partners, how Rokkun sees it, Komaeda should be the very last person in this entire school he should want to be bound to. Still, he looks at the words, at "partners" leading to "hope," at the uncertain "us." ]

He can't even turn it around and ask if Komaeda would share his thoughts, because he already does that, he never shuts up about hope, and in that way he's a lot more open about his beliefs than Rokkun would ever be.

when he looks back over at what's written, he thinks about the struggle that hinata himself endures, not knowing anything, and how komaeda finds this karma that the same is happening to him. something like this would happen to him, and he guesses that's what he gets for being "lucky". forget the past and the future will hold something better for him, he doesn't know what it is just yet, but he's holding out — maybe it's rokkun's hope, maybe that's what he gave the past up for. )
