To be honest, it might be that "charm" [ she does the air quotes ] that puts her off. Somebody acting like that has got to be an act, and she appreciates sincerity.

...It isn't completely an ACT, but it isn't like it's something I can turn off eiTHER. ( He's already reduced his flirting with her because he's aware she's not a fan of it, but. She's dropped books on my feet beFORE, but she hasn't seriously hurt me otherwise—not even before she became the Student Council PresiDENT. She answers my questions no matter how inane she might find THEM, and she indulges me in conversation unless I greviously offend her in some WAY. That's only happened ONCE, and I apoloGIZED... We made UP.
( That's a little distracted, because did they? Well. Probably about as much as they're going to make up, being who they are. He's sincere in his apologies, but it's really not his place to decide if he's worth forgiving... but she did have lunch with him so it's okay. )
She complains plenty about me wasting her TIME, but she's still had lunch with me and made a promise to have another picnic sometime on the roofTOP, as long as she's allowed to shove me off the building after we're finished eatING. ( He doesn't think she'll really-really do it, because the rooftop is a good place for her, and wouldn't a murder just put a bad taste in her mouth? Oh boy. She tries to fix her expression to something more neutral as she listen to him talk (and talk and talk), but for all he says, Maya sounds like a very normal person— somebody who gets annoyed but doesn't wish real harm upon somebody else, is patient enough to answer questions but will walk away if it's not worth the trouble, reciprocates questions because that's just how conversations work even if it's about something mundane like food preference, tries on perfume because that's what you do when you receive one as a gift...

Well, it mostly isn't; knowing more about the students here that do stick out in their minds, whether they're their "fellow transfers" or not, might be key to answering the questions that lurk in the back of his mind: what makes them different, what it really means to be awake, what's the true purpose of this school, what is wrong with this place— ) Isn't it natural for a boy to want to get closer to the girl he LIKES?
