CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Shuichi Saihara
Canon: Dangan Ronpa V3
Canon point: End of chapter 5, post-trial.
Age: ~17
History: Available in detail on Wikipedia.

Personality:

(Preface Notes: This personality section does not get into the big plot twist of Chapter Six, nor into "pre-game" Shuichi who is almost a different person and only has one brief scene of canon content to begin with. This is because, at the current canon point he's taken from, Shuichi has zero knowledge or recollection of that and is 100% as outlined below. In case of an update later on, I'll address any topics as they become relevant at that time!)

- - -

As typical for most characters in the franchise, and especially so due to V3's specific twist, Shuichi's profile is highly defined by his Ultimate Talent and almost every aspect of him as a person is structured around it somehow. So, as the Ultimate Detective, he's in great part what you'd expect from the role: smart, observant, insightful and analytical, and with a strong capacity to remain objective and believe in evidence instead of drawing rash, emotional conclusions. Smaller details fit in with the image too, such as his love for mystery novels or the fact that he can display lowkey morbid interests at times (for example, when walking into a Victorian-styled room, his first thought was that Jack the Ripper lived in that era). Truth is very central to his character, and is featured as a major concept of the game itself, with it being a detective's job to bring it to light.

But that's where the surface stops.

Shuichi tends to be soft-spoken and reserved, in great part because he struggles constantly with self-doubt and a lack of confidence. He has a tendency to downplay his own qualities and accomplishments, even going so far as to point out he's still only an apprentice and not a "real" detective, and doesn't deserve his talent which was only given to him by chance after he "just happened" to solve a case. The case in question is also a lingering source of distress for him; as he reveals to Kaede in late Chapter One, it turned out that the murderer Shuichi discovered had acted for revenge, after the victim had led to the suicide of his family. In theory, the victim deserved what had happened to him, and yet Shuichi's reveal of the truth ended up convicting a man who had already been wronged in turn. He states he's unable to forget that man's eyes, which had been full of hate towards him for solving the case; he can't help but feel it might have been justified, and because of that he developed a fear of uncovering the truth -- a fear of the consequences and guilt that come with doing so, which he believes makes him a poor excuse for a detective.

Also as a result of the above, Shuichi originally wears a hat at the start of the game, which he uses to hide his face because he has trouble looking people in the eye. Following Kaede's death at the end of the first trial, he ends up discarding it and the loss of the hat becomes sort of a metaphor for Shuichi respecting her wish for him to be more confident, and his resolve to work hard while using his skills to get everyone out of the killing game. That said, however, this change is of course not immediate, and there are many aspects of it that also never get better, as it takes very little for Shuichi to get easily startled right back into his old self-doubting thinking and habits. This is especially true since, as the game continues, further killings happen and he's left with no choice but to uncover painful truths yet again in order to save the rest of the group. Shuichi becomes all too aware of how little use his talent can be until after a murder has occurred, as well as of how it kind of falls to him to doubt his friends.

There are key differences between him and previous protagonists in the series, with Kaede being closer in concept to them than Shuichi. Even from the start of the game, his resourcefulness can border a little on underhanded at times -- when he attempts to use tricks such as hidden cameras or small traps designed to reveal the mastermind. Later on, he's willing to tell lies in trials if it means they'll bring out the truth in the end, even if technically it's not playing fair. Shuichi finds these tactics valid to use against people who are also employing them, since it's only fair. One other example of differences is how, although generally practical and proactive about things like investigations and getting to the heart of matters, he lacks the optimism to drive himself forward and requires the support of other characters for that. Initially, that's Kaito looking out for him after Kaede's death, but later on others encourage him as well. Shuichi's own thinking, however, is actually quite negative by nature and even prone to actual spells of depression. After the outside world is revealed to supposedly be uninhabitable in Chapter Five, which means they don't have a place to go back to like they thought, Shuichi is so demoralized that he does nothing but sleep for two days and can't find the energy to even shower or eat or take care of himself, needing Maki to snap him out of that state and give him direction again. He also doesn't find it as easy to trust others, and tends to choose evidence over emotion no matter how much he might want to believe otherwise.

That said, Shuichi does want to believe in others at his core, even if this is partly inspired by people like Kaede or Kaito. He's shown to prefer it over cold suspicion, such as in the second trial where Maki's lack of an alibi comes into discussion, and he opts to side with Kaito on the matter as, since the evidence isn't conclusive one way or another, it's better to start from belief rather than doubt. So, if given the option, he does prefer to choose the kinder variant -- although in spite of this, he doesn't consider himself a very compassionate person and is shown to be surprised sometimes (such as in Himiko's free time events) when he finds himself empathizing. This might be because his main motivation is being fair rather than excessively nice; since he's perceptive and generally open-minded, it means he's very good at spotting good intentions even regardless of their actual results, and he tries to return them if possible. The things which make Shuichi angriest in the series are pointless cruelty and enjoying the suffering of others, which he answers in kind too. The words he says to Kokichi at the end of trial four (when the latter is pretending to do just that as part of his attempt to frame himself as the mastermind) are some of the harshest Shuichi has spoken in the entire game, only outclassed by what he later has to say to the mastermind herself during the final trial.

Although private, and shown on repeated occasions to like personal space and be wary and guarded about contact with people he doesn't feel close to, Shuichi is genuinely curious about others once the ice is broken, and takes his relationships to heart. He's easily fascinated by interesting topics, such as the unique particularities of what the others' talents entail, and is shown to always want to know more, sometimes even against his better judgement. His observant nature helps him work to find common ground even with the most eccentric or difficult characters, and he's good at noticing things about them that they didn't even express. That said, because he's so logical, Shuichi can't be easily lied to and needs things to make sense; if they don't, he has a tendency to nitpick at details and show skepticism. He's also not afraid to point out other people's flaws on occasion, such as how he doesn't allow Kaito to get away with baseless boasting, and speaks his mind rather more often than one would expect from his anxious demeanor. He's also expressed a need to feel helpful on multiple different occasions, and seems happy to be relied upon, or willing to put in effort if he can see the need for it; even if this sometimes marks him a pushover and in Chapter Four the rest of the group even labels him as a masochist, which seems to bother him. Over the course of the series, he becomes less guarded than he was at the start, and more firm in his beliefs, as well as more and more determined to stop looking away from the truth. In this manner, Shuichi grows from the "weak" character he was designed as, into someone capable of taking his life into his own hands -- which is also the very decision he makes at the end of the game.

Powers/abilities:

ULTIMATE DETECTIVE
The way Danganronpa works, every character has a specific "talent" -- which means in essence a skill or particular thing they're abnormally good at. Shuichi's title per his talent is Ultimate Detective, which means he's particularly good at investigation and mystery or puzzle-solving work. Due to the nature of V3's main plot twist, it's in the end unknown whether this talent is real in his case or just a fabrication designed for his "character" on a TV show via fake memories. However, it's shown to work as intended, and Shuichi proves himself smart, sharp, more observant than the average person, and good at making deductions that can lead him to figure out any given situation with enough clues and time.

Questions:

✽ What does your character consider to be their top three strengths?
This is the most difficult question someone could ever ask Shuichi, because most of the things he recognizes he's good at are also the same things that lead to his stress and hesitation. His talent is an obvious one, but at best he tends to dismiss it as just a title he doesn't deserve, and at worst he can be afraid to use it because of past experiences. Secondly, there's his ability to remain objective, which ends up hurting him instead when he has to make difficult choices (sometimes against less rational friends). And the last one would be that he's diligent and hard-working, but he himself described it more as "being good at boring work".

✽ What do others consider to be your character's greatest weakness?
His insecurity and tendency to self-doubt. Both of the most important people to him in canon have told him he needs to be more confident and trust more in himself and his deductions, and he gets chided or bullied on occasion for similar reasons by the rest of the cast.

✽ What are your character's three greatest fears?
His most notable one is that his detective work will only reveal painful or unfair truths that will only make him feel guilty, mirroring what already happened with his first case. Ironically though, he's also afraid of getting things wrong and of making mistakes, also because of how many things can depend on his deductions. Lastly, he suffers from impostor syndrome and seems to worry quite a bit about how others view him, especially when it comes to his skills. During trials in game, if the player chooses wrong, Shuichi is distressed because he thinks he'll be seen as a fraud by the others.

✽ What would your character choose for a last meal?
He'd blank out when asked, settle for a cup of tea (or for someone else's suggestion) because nothing else comes to mind, and then wonder if that was too anti-climactic for the context. Maybe he should have thought harder about it, but... it's not like it matters anymore, right? So it's fine.

✽ Has your character ever killed? If so, how did that affect them? If not, how would it affect them?
He hasn't killed anyone directly, but the entire context of his canon is high-schoolers forced to participate in a killing game. As the Ultimate Detective, it's mostly his work that leads to the culprits being discovered and executed, so Shuichi feels responsible for their deaths and is often bogged down by guilt over it. This is a sensitive topic to him, leaving him especially averse to people who treat the lives of others as unimportant. For example, he might be able to feel bad for the participants due to their extenuating circumstances, but he's unable to forgive the mastermind behind the game itself or the people who enjoyed watching it. He wouldn't kill someone of his own will, and if forced to he'd likely break down after.

(As an addendum: This is ironic considering pre-game, before the memory wipe, he seemed infatuated with the concept of a detective becoming the culprit and wanted to commit an unsolvable murder on the show. Shuichi at this canon point doesn't remember, but when that was revealed in Chapter 6, it absolutely horrified him as his current self.)

✽ If your character was given one selfish wish (eg. must be applied to themselves and not affect others), what would it be?
Nothing. Shuichi's cautious, suspicious, and no matter how strong his emotions might get, he always chooses with his head in the end. He'd find it difficult to trust there's no catch to an offer like that, and besides, he might also feel there's more value in achieving something himself by actually making effort for it. He's a stronger character than he looks.
