CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Satou Kuroneko
Canon: Original
Canon point: Age 16; Shortly after the Yumeno family dies
Age: 16
History:
    Long Version
I do recommend reading the full version, as Satou's story is not just of one person and therefore difficult to capture in 10 sentences. I've done my best to write out the widest strokes!

Satou was born under the name "Samantha" to Yosuke Kuroneko and his wife Horie Fletcher, with one purpose in mind: To be the strongest magical girl in existence. Her mother made deals with other witches so that Samantha would have the strongest magical capacity and would raise her to fill it, then race the others to see who could use Samantha's power first.

But Horie got cold feet about using her daughter in such a way, instead confessing to Yosuke about the plot and fleeing with their daughter to Japan. Samantha was given a new name in an attempt to hide her from the other witches and a magical familiar to hide her magic in; This familiar was introduced to the magic-oblivious girl as her new younger sister, Sakura. Ultimately though, the witches who wanted to use Satou's magic capacity did find her and started her on a magical journey in order to fill up her capacity. There was an accident that resulted in the death of Yosuke and Horie going mad, but neither sister were fully aware of the details that split their family apart.

The sisters were sent on a misguided quest to repair their family, which was actually an attempt to make Satou the ideal catalyst for the witches' selfish wishes. Eventually the sisters were forced apart as well, with Satou paying the price of magic overuse: That price was the thing she valued most (her ability to be recognized,) and resulted in Satou becoming "invisible" to society. But love is the most powerful magic of all, and allowed a family she had met early on to see through her invisibility curse and attempt to adopt her... Only for the secret plot against Satou to swing its ax at the family and leave them dead, Satou alone again.

Personality:
Like most characters in her canon, Satou's character arc is driven by how she relates to her own emotions. In her case, she is held back by the fact that she cannot accept her own feelings. She is a lonely girl who has an idea of who she wants to be, but does not understand how to become that person. Satou is also sixteen years old, and going through more than a normal sixteen year old girl should.

To start, it helps to understand who Satou wishes she was: "A Magical Girl." Since an early age, Satou has been influenced by magical girl stories. Her mother taught Satou to be selfless, kind, and to believe in things like "the power of love and friendship!" These are essential building blocks for a strong witch, hence Hori's initial decision to feed her daughter this specific media.
As a result, Satou believes that the ideal person is an optimistic and cheerful person. The media she consumed taught her that a "good girl" is pure, selfless, and kind to everyone. But moreso than that, Satou saw these types of characters were loved by their (fictional) friends and family. This became her baseline for what a person needed to be in order to be loved. And therefore, the baseline for who Satou thought that she had to be in order to earn love.

To achieve this, Satou will often over-amplify these traits in herself. At first glance, she is bubbly, smiling, and kind of dumb. Satou plays up Yamato Nadeshiko qualities when she can, such as being polite and refined. She imagines her magic as pink and sparkly, gives herself a heart shaped wand, wears frilly dresses, and moves with girly body language, all in an attempt to sell herself as a cute magical girl stereotype. All because she thinks people like it, and it has worked.

This is important: Satou over-amplifies these traits in her canon, because they win her love. Satou will amplify or repress parts of her personality in order to earn love. Her cutesy personality will drop if it isn't winning her love. With Mikale, for example, Satou is much darker and rougher: Because he accepts and loves that in her, so being honest is an effective strategy. With Sakura, Satou drops the ditziness and plays the role of "responsible big sister," because that is the quality Sakura openly admired. However, she won't drop the act until she knows what the other party wants from her and has decided that she wants them to like her. At the end of the day, Satou wants people to like her, but she's a silly teenager about it.

However, Satou does not expect these traits in others. Deep down, Satou wants to be accepted for who she really is: An energetic girl who loves to goof off, tease her friends, and engage in friendly competitions. Unfiltered, Satou is louder and more childish. Sometimes she wants to argue or be snarky, but she thinks she has to restrain herself. Satou would like to be openly competitive and engage in weird hobbies. She wants to be able to be this person, but has been raised to think that most of her traits are bad. In particular, Satou had been taught to see her magical girl idea as "virtuous and good," where-as her true feelings are "sinful and bad."

So her title is no accident. It's entirely intentional and meant to guilt Satou into hating herself. Benita's decision to title Satou as "Witch of Sins" is a way of controlling her magic: She purposefully made Satou more aware of the things she hates about herself, so that Satou would be more desperate to hide them. In her world, this means that Satou is not able to create her maximum potential for magic. She is running from her own emotions, because she is ashamed of them.

Some of the sins that Satou makes a big deal out of include:

Greed: Satou wants. Of course she does. She has lost her parents, her sister, her friends, no longer has a roof over her head, struggles to be fed... Satou wants a lot. But because she's called "Witch of Sins," Satou is terrified of wanting "too much." She doesn't let herself indulge in wanting sweet desserts, in liking cute lolita dresses, or even wanting human things like company. In fact, Satou will purposefully deny her interest in these things. An example of this being how her dresses become much more plain after she's given her title, whereas before she was obsessed with high fashion. The way she tries to avoid greed is unhealthy, but she's so desperate for that "purity" image that she goes to these unhealthy lengths.

Wrath: Satou is angry. Again: Of course she is. Everything has been taken from her. She's homeless, lonely, sad, and she wants to blame something. She wants to lash out, and cry, and scream, and yell. But as much as possible, Satou restrains these desires. Because again: Anger is a sin, and she doesn't want to be The Witch of Sins. Satou puts on a smile and forgives endlessly, even when she shouldn't be expected to. A fun fact worth mentioning is that because she has her anger pent up so tightly, Satou becomes very dangerous when it's unleashed. It's a huge source of magic for her and leads to violent outbursts that she can't always control properly.

Envy: Satou compares herself to others, constantly. She wants to be the best, so has to size up her competition. However, Satou pretends this isn't the case. When it comes up, she dismisses the idea that she might want what others have. This becomes especially apparent in future parts of her story: Satou stays with a happy family, and wants to have a family like that too. Afraid of her own envy, Satou initially puts up walls and tries to keep that family at a distance. She doesn't know how to be envious in a healthy manner, so tries to remove herself from situations that make her envious.

Sloth: This is not a sin that Satou actually embodies, but she thinks she does. Satou works herself to the bone, so no one can accuse her of sloth. Sometimes this means working herself passed the point of exhaustion and becoming very sick. In previous RP settings, this has led to Satou taking on multiple jobs and giving herself no free time. If she's going to take a break, she has to disguise it as a training exercise. Otherwise, she's too scared to relax.

By this point, I hope I've made my point: Satou is a teenage human, and humans sin to varying degrees. Satou rarely exhibits extraordinary levels of sin, except in her paranoid head. She has to squash these, or she cannot be "pure" and cannot be "likable." All of this paranoia is caused by one major catalyst: The Witch of Sins title.

When the title is not a concern, Satou will be able to relax. She will still want to define "Satou" to people as being "pure, and LIKABLE," but she will not be going to terrified extremes. But at the end of the day, a lot of Satou's true personality has been swept away, because she doesn't like it. When those around her accept her "flaws," Satou will gradually bloom into a brighter person. This canonically happens in the next arc of her story, where she lives in a positive family environment and is properly loved by two mothers. However, it's very possible-- and very likely,--- to happen in game as well.

The girl trapped under the surface-- under formalities, under polite smiles, under veils of acceptance,--- is a socially awkward teenage girl. Satou has rarely had a chance to express her entire personality, but has only repressed it. This means that when Satou isn't acting, she doesn't always know how to act.

A clear example of this comes in how an "unleashed" Satou handles her anger. When she gets mad at someone, her usual response is to sweep it under the rug and smile. She doesn't engage in aggression or hate, because those are "bad" qualities and she is meant to be "good." If you do get her to slip up, Satou can react with violence and immaturity. She gives people the silent treatment, calls them names, and may even act violently depending on how angry she is. This is because the only way Satou knows how to handle anger is to not handle it.

This theme of "not dealing with it," is part of what Benita pressured Satou into. It keeps a cap on her powers. When Satou does engage in her emotions, it's go big or go home. She either cries an ocean, or doesn't cry at all. She either gets so excited that she's twirling around with her arms in the air--- or, restrains her excitement entirely. As she makes friends and learns to drop her boundaries, Satou is likely to come off as downright silly and childish. She may pitch fits and pout, brag and mock, or laugh and cry. All in absolute extremes.

That isn't to say, however, that every part of Satou's "act" is fake. She is a kind person, even if she doesn't recognize it. She is someone who always believes in good, always hopes, and always offers her love. Even when she has a long history of loss and being taken advantage of. She really is the kind of magical girl who can embody love and hope in her life, because she actively chooses love and hope every time.
Satou calls her loving personality "a selfish desire not to be alone," while not understanding that is exactly what love is. Her love is selfish, and she works hard to keep people around her. And that isn't necessarily a bad thing, despite her taught self-hatred.

Satou is also decently mature, even at this point in her story. She may not be emotionally mature, but what sixteen year old is? Her hard life has lent her to become resourceful and cunning. Her stupid and ditzy act drops especially hard when Satou is in a fight. She's the type of person who recognizes her flaws--- to the point that itself is a flaw,--- but is always looking to overcome them. In a fight, this means that Satou covers her weaknesses. It also leads to her being pretty brutal. Satou is a magical girl stuck in a world that tries to punish kindness. She wants to extend her hand diplomatically to her opponents, but sometimes that won't work. Satou will break her moral code and even kill, but it's only as a last resort. She will talk a person down until they pull the trigger.

Her maturity carries over in how she deals with other people. Satou is very patient. Her sympathy, and empathy, have been trained since she was a child. Even after her mother stopped trying to mold her, Felicity was actively pushing Satou into situations that trained her to be kind. As stated, Satou chooses diplomacy where Benita wanted her to chose murder. A key example of Satou's patience can be seen in how she deals with Mikale: She never pushes him to immediately remember her, and never asks him to fake being "okay." Throughout the series, she supports him on a slow path forward and builds a new relationship from scratch.
Satou knows how hard it is to be pressured by those around you, so she tries not to be that pressuring force on others. She knows how it feels to be ignored until your emotions explode, she knows what it's like to throw violent tantrums. So she tries to understand others and tries to weather their storms. Her empathy isn't just a strong magic gene: It's a strong personality trait.

It's this strength of her kindness that ultimately keeps Satou from being truly broken by Benita, and keeps her magic alive. Throughout her story, Satou struggles to draw magic from accepting herself. Her strength comes from accepting and loving others. Even when Benita assigns her the Witch of Sins title and purposefully tries to get Satou killed, she never closes her heart off to the point that she cannot perform magic. Satou may give in to killing, as Benita pushes her into grim situations, but she never loses herself to her sinful nature. She keeps trying and believing in the person she could be, which ultimately leads to Satou truly becoming that person.

Powers/abilities:
Satou comes from a world where magic is a genetic ability. Furthermore, her world's ability to use magic is actually split between two genes: "Magical Capacity" and "Empathy." Magical Capacity determines how much magic a magician can store in their body at once-- which further determines their potential for strong spells,-- while Empathy is the ability to fill that magic container. Furthermore, Empathy is a recessive trait and gradually being lost. This has led to the illusion that magic is rare, but it is a commonly accepted theory that 80% of the world's population does have Magical Capacity.

Another genetic consideration in her world's magic is a "curse" that most all magic users carry on their magical genes. It is something that, hundreds of years ago, all of the surviving magicians of the time accepted onto themselves. In essence, the curse causes the magic users to pay a price for overusing their magic. The price is "something very important," and because the curse is activated by the magician's subconscious, it is varied from person to person.

Satou has both genetic traits (empathy and magic capacity,) as well as the genetic curse. She was also born with increasing both traits as significantly as possible. Her magic style therefore tends to rely on high power magic attacks and speed, but she lacks defenses and stamina.

::: Empathy: The first genetic trait that a magician like Satou needs is "empathy." It is the title for a sixth sense which allows a magic user to sense emotions. The feeling is akin to feeling pulses or waves in the air, with the speed and strength changing depending on the strength of the emotion. Empathy is also a raised trait and something that can be trained: It is linked to a sympathetic personality. People with emotional empathy can identify emotions more accurately and use them more effectively for magic. Becoming kinder can strengthen empathy, while losing touch can weaken it. Emotions are the source of magical energy and the basis for all spells.

In Satou's case, she was raised to have exceptional empathy. Her empathy is strong enough that she has even been known to mistake the feelings of others for her own. Though Satou can pinpoint where specific emotions are coming from, she is more likely to notice "crowd emotions" when she isn't focused. For example, she is more likely to notice collective fear than pinpoint a specific scared person. Lastly, she can "turn off" her empathy by not actively focusing on it.

Empathy can, however, be used to sense people. She can tell if living beings are within a certain radius of herself. This is because the energy sensed by empathy is a "Life Energy." Witches with strong empathy can read the emotions assigned to it, but the energy is a physical manifestation of a heart's willpower. Satou can therefore sense people even without pinpointing what their emotions are, and she can do so quite accurately. Her magic can also be sensed as "Life Energy."

::: Magical Capacity: The second genetic trait that Satou has and needs. This is probably her most important trait too, since it was the one manipulated at her birth. Magical Capacity refers to how much magic a mage can process in any given moment. It isn't something that you can train, either. Depending on how large or small a magician's capacity is, their strongest spell may be a simple spark or a nuclear explosion: Satou leans towards the explosive side.

However, reaching maximum capacity means processing a lot of magic at one time. This is physically stressful. While normal magicians with normal capacities don't need to worry about overloading their bodies, Satou can process more magic than her young body should be capable of. She gets very tired from using her maximum capacity, and can even die if she pushes herself too far. In a roleplay setting, Satou can create large scale blasts of magic that could level a street, but anything more would leave her sick for days.

Satou's magic capacity allows her to perform a wide range of spells. The general rule of thumb for her very flexible magic is "If you can truly imagine it, you can make it happen." This gives magic users like Satou a lot of freedom with their magic, but also one huge limitation: They cannot half-heartedly perform magic. Magicians like Satou need to believe in themselves and the spell they are casting, or it simply won't happen.

There are three categories that her magical capabilities, and limitations, fall into:

::: Magical Creations: This is the category most unique to Satou's brand of magic. Satou is able to create things with her magic, so long as she understands the process of their creation. In one sense, this means she has to understand the difference between "creating" and "stealing." If Satou wants to make it snow, she can either create snow or funnel it from a place she knows has snow. When creating something, Satou needs to understand the mechanics behind her creation process. If she doesn't know the science behind snow, she cannot create it from scratch.

This comes into play especially when Satou is creating complex objects. For example, Satou cannot make a television. Why? Because she does not understand how a television works. She may be able to make something that looks like a TV, but because she does not understand how it functions she cannot magic a functioning television.

There is a dangerous silverlining to this: If Satou thinks she understands something, she can make "her version" of it. This is why children in Satou's world normally don't begin using their magic until they have a firm grasp of reality. It is also why a strong and confident imagination is such a valuable tool to a magician.

    Satou also cannot magic materials from no where. She needs to have raw materials to create lasting objects. Things made without a physical material basis are just magic illusions, which will disappear if she loses focus. For example;
If Satou creates a shield using physical material, like a stone wall, then it becomes a permanent structure. It is actual stone that she has formed into a shielding shape. It will not disappear if she stops focusing. But if Satou creates a shield with magical energy, it will disappear if she stops focusing; Because it only exists so long as Satou wills it to. This becomes especially important with the shield example. If Satou loses focus, such as in the case of being surprised, her magic shield will disappear. In particular, this has been a problem when Satou is surprise attacked, faced with bullets (which scare her into losing focus,) or worrying about other people.

For creating physical objects: Satou has an understanding of how to sew and how to handle metals, so finds it easy to make clothing and metal objects. She will not be able to create complex objects in Deerington without a lot of instruction. I will also require that she see a physical blueprint (no one can just magically explain how to make something,) and that she have 3 days minimum to practice making the item before mastering it. And of course: she needs materials.

::: Magical Attacks: This is the category of your generic magical girl spam, and relies on Satou's imagination. "Raw Magic" is a glowy, hot energy that can be molded into magical attacks. Satou's magic tends to be pink or black, depending on how she's feeling. Her magical attacking style is typically ranged, relying on a combination of beamspam and magic bullets.

In close combat, Satou can use her magic to coat her fists or feet when making powered-up punches or kicks. She can also use magic on her feet to speed herself up, or slap magic on others to slow them down. Her limiting factor is her human brain: Using multiple spells at once requires a lot of multi-tasking. Satou has learned to overcome this by juggling her spells very rapidly, but this is still mentally taxing. After a big magic fight, Satou will often have a headache and be very tired.

::: Magical Modifications: This category is most important for examining Satou's healing abilities. Magic can be used to repair or reinforce breaking objects, simply because Satou can fix things on a molecular level. It also means she can speed growth, such as making flowers bloom, or even heal wounds. She simply needs to understand the process in order to speed it up. This requires some energy from Satou and will leave her feeling pretty wiped.

At her current canon point, Satou doesn't heal humans because she doesn't fully understand them. She was constantly healing herself when she was younger, and that has resulted in permanent damage to her left leg and scarring all over her body. This was a side effect of Satou not fully understanding the science.

::: Firearms: Satou has learned how to take care of a handgun. Because she knows how to take it apart and clean it, she also knows what pieces make-up a gun and how to recreate them. Unfortunately, she can only make the pieces. She has to reassemble it herself.

Her guns do hold magic bullets, which are pre-made spells that she loads into magazines. These bullets exist for scenarios where her magic has been disabled, so she has two hand guns with separate uses: The first is to cause damage and the second is to facilitate an escape. She cannot reorganize the order of the spells, so keeps them in a predictable pattern that she can keep track of.

The attack pattern is three magic shots and then a forth that drags a beam between the three bullets, like a homing mechanism. This pattern repeats three times, so a total of 16 bullets in the magazine.

The escape pattern is two bright flash bullets (blinding,) with the second including a distracting whooshing sound. The third bullet gives Satou a strength buff for her escape. This pattern of three bullets repeats five times, for a total of 15 bullets in the magazine.

She has to replace them after each fight, which takes her a few hours. Satou can also pre-load just about any spell into her guns, but it must be done ahead of time. She cannot create widescale explosive magic for the bullets, because she cannot control the blast without magic: In a scenario where her magic is nullified, they would be far too dangerous.

::: Aikido: Satou's preferred martial arts style.

::: Magic Wand: Satou can channel her magic through a magic staff. She purposefully creates an illusion of being dependent on it, in order to lure her opponents into trying to disable her by attacking the wand. Most children and teens in her world require a wand to safely channel their magic, but Satou was bred to be an excellent witch: She's never truly needed it. However, there is a major advantage to it: Magic Wands are made to eliminate the need for a witch to rely on their empathy. The witch fills the wand with magic, then the wand holds magic in its own artifact Magic Capacity Chamber. This means that, in the event that Satou's magic-making abilities are nullified, her wand still holds some brief magical energy. It can continue to cast spells against Witch Hunters who nullify her magic until the capacity runs out. This is because wands are a machine and magic is an energy similar to electricity: It doesn't depend on a witch once its been created.

Unfortunately, Satou cannot refill her wand with magic after a witch hunter has nullified her magic generating. That doesn't make the wand useless to her, as she can order it to cast spells that are programmed into it. Wands are programmed to create shields and controlled explosions. A further downside, in Satou's case, is that her wand doesn't have the same capacity as her. It's only got an average capacity, which is significantly less than her natural capacity.

She can modify her wand to be a physical weapon, often favoring a "Scythe Form." The forms of her wand are limited only by her imagination and ability to use them effectively. Satou has rough technique with her scythe (the heavy size gives it momentum, even if she doesn't have magic to propel it,) and some skill with a sword form.

When casting huge spells, Satou uses her wand to balance her magic and avoid unnecessary strain on her body.

Questions:
✽ What does your character consider to be their top three strengths?
Satou believes that she is a fast learner, a resilient person, and powered by LOVE. However she'd be hesitant to publicly say she is any of these things, because she is worried about coming off as cocky or bragging. Instead she would publicly claim the power of love, cheerfulness, and friendliness. These being qualities she wished were stronger than they are, which also suit her idolized "magical girl" version of herself.

✽ What do others consider to be your character's greatest weakness?
To those who don't know her well, they would say that she's a bit stupid and oblivious to the feelings of others. Satou purposefully puts on a show of being a cheerful dumbass to strangers, because that's the kind of heroine she reads about in comics.

But to those who know her well, particularly to Mikale, Satou's greatest weakness is that she wants to be loved. She will bend and change her personality, sacrifice her mental and physical health, work to the born, and most of all hate herself into insanity in order to be loved. She doesn't understand that she's already plenty loveable as she is.

✽ What are your character's three greatest fears?
Being alone, being helpless, and being unwanted. Satou fights her loneliness by trying to please every last person that she meets, but can't fill that void. The reason being that Satou also wants to be, well, wanted and that being surrounded by people doesn't mean they want you.

Lastly, Satou hates helplessness. She can crawl out of many desperate situations by using her intellect and magic, but being completely helpless with no way out would translate to hopelessness.

✽ What would your character choose for a last meal?
Satou wouldn't see the point in a last meal. She doesn't intend to die and accepting a "last meal" would mean "giving up" to her. She would glare at the one offering and refuse it.

✽ Has your character ever killed? If so, how did that affect them? If not, how would it affect them?
By her current canon point, Satou has killed and regretted it. In her canon, a dying body releases what Satou describes as "wasted emotions," such as love, hatred, aspirations, hopes, and regrets. She is haunted by these leftover feelings, because Satou is able to sense in the last moments that even her most "evil" victims were humans with feelings like her.

She regrets killing to the point that she trains her student, Shugo, in a way that he can never kill anyone and experience the feeling of murder. To Satou, killing is the ultimate burden and she wishes it upon no one.

✽ If your character was given one selfish wish (eg. must be applied to themselves and not affect others), what would it be?
To be loved unconditionally. Satou is tired of feeling like she needs to jump through hoops and beg people to love her. The irony being that even if Satou was granted unconditional love, she would not understand how to accept it for free and would drive herself crazy trying to 'earn' it.
