( oh, spooky. that sounds like it should be written in the school rules. in any case, amami will allow his smile to fall into something more serious. )

Alright, I'll keep that in mind. If that's true, it's strange that we haven't met before though — do you only come on certain nights?

( you know, like when poor people can only afford for their maid to visit once a week? )

"Come"?

[ He tilts his head, not understanding. ]

I am always here.

[ Maybe not hanging around the courtyard, but even then it's not so infrequent that he would fail to cross paths with anybody who takes the time of day to pay attention to what's outside. Maybe if they all opened their eyes, they'd notice and see him. ]

But I have little reason to talk with students, and they even less to talk with me.

[sisters]

Hm.

( always? with that, it's amami's turn not to understand; he gives an almost doubtful look through the glass. )

I guess that might normally be the case, but... when you came up to the door, a few minutes ago, I saw that you didn't seem to be able to get in.

( there's no getting around asking about it, but he wants to see if the other has anything to offer in terms of an explanation. )

[adsum]

[ Kazuki nods, but doesn't seem to think much of it. ]

The plants along the wall need watering, but those inside the building are not part of my domain. I need not tend to them.

[ Taking care of the inside of the school is the janitor's job, thanks. There's little to no reason for Kazuki to want to go indoors, tasty students aside. ]

[sisters]

( well that's good for him and all, but the tasty students kind of want to get outside, so...

also, amami's still not quite convinced he wasn't trying to open the fridge. )

And the light?

[adsum]

[ Look... sometimes you just want to take a peek. See what's available for a midnight snacking. ]

A reminder to stay on my side of the boundary. Do you wish to cross?

[sisters]

Maybe.

( no promises, freak. )

More importantly: why is there a boundary in place?

[adsum]

"Why"...? Boundaries are a natural occurrence between two places, are they not?

[ There is no why about it, it just is. A wall is a wall. It keeps students in and bugs and monsters out. ]

[sisters]

I guess that in some cases they are...

( but this isn't much of a "wall," to be honest. maybe he'd describe it more like a "filter"? )

But it seems strange that some can pass through and others can't.

[adsum]

[ A semi-permeable membrane, considering the few classes that are allowed out in the courtyard during school hours, but that's day and this is night and Kazuki tilts his head the other way. ]

Why is it strange?

[sisters]

( okay, that might be the ideal metaphor, but listen! science isn't exactly amami's forte, and he has bigger things to worry about. )

Because there has to be a difference between them. I'm wondering what, exactly, that difference is.

[adsum]

[ If there's a difference, Kazuki doesn't think too much about it, as that sort of knowledge does not affect him one way or another. He might not be able to get inside the school, but there will always be somebody who tries to break out. And he is patient. ]

I do not know. My apologies, but I cannot help you understand something I do not.

[sisters]

No worries. You seemed to know about this place, so I thought you might have an idea.

( to be honest, he doesn't know if kazuki is telling the truth or not, and an answer to that might have been a bit much to hope for.

that doesn't mean that amami can't get any answers at all from him, though. )

Is there a way I can talk with you again? Like I said, I haven't seen you around before, so...

[adsum]

I am always here.

[ so, like, Amami not seeing him before is his problem. ]

If you wish to speak with me, call me over as you did today. I may not be able to help your circumstances, but I will listen.

[sisters]

( not what he was looking for, but you know what? kaede and rika are still waiting for him back there, so he wants to wrap this up. one last question for the sketchy midnight man: )

Sure, I'll do that. And before, when you asked me if I wanted to cross the boundary — that's kind of the goal, so can you tell me how?

( he wouldn't have asked that if he wasn't willing to share, right? right? )

[ Kazuki picks up his watering can and returns to his gardening. ]

( yeah, that's fair. gives him a little wave goodbye. )
