[ Hiro startles when Komaeda touches his shoulder, hand jolting away from the bag of candy he was clearly going for and accidentally pressing the button next to it instead.

The vending machine dispenses a glass jar. Inside the glass jar is a horned beetle. It buzzes. ]

( he's looking at it, seeing it fly around in the jar, and it's awful because they hit against the glass don't they? )

[ LOOK I googled vending machines and you can get everything from bugs to underwear from them. Not in school vending machines, maybe, but sometimes you want bugs? Maybe this is how Shoto is feeding his frog.

Hiro doesn't want this, though, no thank you. He slides Komaeda's PDA in his pocket so he can free up his hands to grab that jar and walk over to Komaeda and hold it out to him to take, by which I mean he holds it up to Komaeda's face. You eat it. ]

( first of all, what the fuck. second of all, does he look like tsumiki to you? he'll take verbal and physical abuse, but he's not eating no damn bug. )

( of course, komaeda goes and smacks the jar out of his hand without a care when pushing it away — yeah so if he's unable to catch it or have a tight grip on it... rip to bug-kun, komaeda is different. )

[ RIP bug-kun, because the jar falls from Hiro's hands and cracks on the ground, glass spilling across the floor and the beetle zipping out of it and taking flight— it goes for Hiro's face and he drops to a crouch, curling up to a little ball and covering the back of his neck with his hands so it can't crawl under his collar.

What's wrong... ( okay, hiro's me about any bug that flies at me even though i know it won't really do nothing, but they be hard and gross don't bump me. ) This is an insect, small and insignificant like me...

[ Small and insignificant as bugs are, they're gross and creepy because they're so small, unnoticeable until they're right in your face and takes you by surprise. Gross, gross... Hiro curls a little tighter in on himself, clearly unwilling to open himself up and is content to crouch here until his ankles go numb, but...

He can't help but peek up at Komaeda though his bangs when his hope is mentioned, the detriment it's caused, the wholly miserable look on his face when he searches for the beetle with his eyes while he steels himself to

whip Komaeda's PDA out of his pocket and smack the beetle out of the air with surprising speed and accuracy for a boy who looks half asleep all the time and who winces when he hears the crunch of beetle shell against the device in his hand and tosses it away from him, the PDA clattering on the ground at Komaeda's feet, covered in bug guts and bits of beetle shell.

( not going to lie to you, as soon as komaeda gets his pda back, he's looking at the splatter like it can be used for something. the crunch of the bug was audible, so this would give a more crisp flavor to some food he could make later. this is good luck! and he's pretty happy with it as he kneels down to pick it up. pulling out his switchblade, he's attempting to scrape it off into a pile on the floor so he can save it. )

That was pretty good, Arisu-kun! You always know where to aim to kill something.

( is that praise or a reminder, either way, and the way he says it is like he understand what he's going through. or is that the emotional manipulation he's so good at. whatever it is, as soon as he finishes what he's doing, and double checking that he's actually got it all... he's walking to the vending machine again. holding it up, he spends what he needs to get the bag of candy he noticed the other was going for, and it drops ker-chunk! to the bottom. )

There we go... ( he wants hiro to eat the candy and give komaeda the bag for his beetle flavoring. :c )

[ ...Hiro's just going to shuffle away a little as Komaeda scrapes bug gunk off the floor. He looks pretty shaken, biting at his bottom lip in an attempt to appear impassive, but his hands are clutched at the hem of his shirt. They don't shake. They're just clenched tight enough that he has control over them, to keep them still and not reach out for the offered candy even though his gaze lingers on it.

He reaches out and takes the offered candy and places it in his pocket. ]

( komaeda has enough points to spare since he does go to class — he's a good boy, he knows that knowledge is also power. staring at the vending machine, he turns toward to look towards hiro to see if he'll point at anything else. while he's here, he'll also check if there's any cat food for him to buy, and while he does have those treats left... you know they are dwindling, and he should at least get lily may something.

what's her favorite cat food, komaeda and hiro will be learning lily may facts today. )

[ Is he being treated... He shuffles closer to the vending machine and looks things over, points out a box of strawberry milk and also those corn chips that are shaped like cones and you have to cap your fingers with them before you eat them.

There is no cat food to be found in the vending machine, but your Lily May fact of the day is that I don't actually remember what brand of cat food I get her bc I grab whatever's on sale when I'm at the store, but she does like this brand that's like... oblong kibble pieces in green and tan and brown and she'll scarf it down even though I pour out her food in four separate locations around my room so she's forced to run around and find it all so she doesn't eat too fast. The bag I have now is plain round brown and she'll eat some and then walk away and graze throughout the day until it's gone by the next meal time but she clearly isn't as enamored by it. tl;dr Lily May likes colors. ]

( everything he chose, komaeda opts out for the opposite — he goes from chocolate milk, to you know those tortilla scoops right before hiro's eyes, purchasing them without a care. that's how it is for komaeda, just a little despair which makes the hope inside a person even stronger once they can get past the disappointment they feel, and this one isn't so bad — hiro can still eat. he pulls back his pda, checking his merit points to see how much he has left, and once satisfied with that. )

( you know, talking to him like a dog who knows how to play fetch. as that's done, he's sliding his pda back into his pocket while watching hiro. now, if there was cat food in this vending machine, it would be over, actually. i want her to have more obling kibble food, and you know what, maybe this means komaeda will have to find her some colorful treats. when will they get a cat vending machine, and omg i just googled it's called a petbox, so when is one of them being made in yogen so komaeda can spend all his points there. anything to get lily may the colors she deserve. )

[ Wha...

Hiro stares at the chocolate milk and tortilla scoops waiting at the end of the chute at the bottom of the vending machine, math memeing about what this means and what he's supposed to do with them. Not eat them. He could give them to his sister, but she would probably berate him for spending his points on this junk.

So he just shakes his head and walks away. ]

[ Lily May fact I just today discovered: she doesn't like her boring brown kibble BUT if I soak it in water and present it like fake wet food she will shove my hand out of the way before I even fully set the bowl back down, cat food rankings as follows:
