But if you simply said that you experienced something strange that you wanted my opinion on, that would have been enough. If you said you wanted to eat together instead of baiting me to an auditorium picnic, that would have been enough.

( Natsume tenses, a different type of tension than the one that had wound up before like a spring trap—it's tighter, quicker to come and snapping away quicker, too. Not a gentle fade, but a mouse-trap, and he looks away from her.

( He's been told he has a bad personality, that he's a hyprocrite, that he doesn't think of people's feelings, that it's surprising that kids love him, that he's embarrassing, that he's shady as hell, but never not once has he ever been called "too much"... to his face; maybe behind closed doors it's different, but even here she's the only one.

And yeah, he hasn't made it easy; he doesn't like being known, but he's still human. It's still nice. He just also doesn't like it. That's why he has so many words. )

Maya pushes off from the wall, as if to walk away, but instead she stops in front of him, face to face, her turn in the sun. ]

( He was ready for her to leave, but she doesn't and she's in front of him instead, and Natsume can't help but look at her--stares at her, eyes narrowed slightly for the sun, for his guardedness, and instead of answering like a good boy he leans against the wall and asks, )

Are you taking back your words about not wanting to be FRIENDS?

[ Maya makes a face at him blocking the door, because who's twelve now? It answers his question, in her opinion, because if he still wants to be friends, she can make the effort to know him, decide after whether she wants to be friends or not, and as of right now she doesn't know.

She hardly ever knows, when it comes to Natsume. ]

I don't know anymore. I feel like whether I say yes or no, nothing will change between us. We are still the same people.

[ Not a hard no, not a hard yes. Maya is in camp "friendship is just a word" like all of my friendless npcs, wary to pick up labels with all the expectations associated with them. ]

[ She doesn't know, but she can make a guess and she's usually right about those. While she can't claim to be good with people or understand them, she knows herself and the way she will stubbornly stick to her guns... despite telling Natsume that, even in the tiniest most imperceptible ways, people change when the heart, the soul, is swayed. That she wants to do better.
