Yeah, I know. I guess... I'm just not too used to group decisions like that.

( he shrugs. )

Usually it would just come down to me, so it's kinda hard to shake that feeling.

[ yea he was supposed to change his mind and go "actually kamo-kun's art is so amazing I'm going to keep it for myself" or something ]

I know many who are headstrong and would feel the same. But you recognize you are not alone. Do you feel responsible, still?

( october it will be his turn, he can be patient. liz knows too now.

anyway, amami gives a sigh here. )

( if he sounds unsure, it's because the answer is actually yes. what is this, counselling? )

[ That sounds like a guess, and monster Kazuki gives him a head tilt in response. Sometimes you were a teacher years and years and years ago and conversations sound like counselling, and kids will always be kids. ]

Let me turn the question around, then. How have you been doing? Experiencing what you all did cannot be the most comfortable.

[sisters]

I mean, you're not wrong, but I don't think I have room to complain.

( there's a smile to go along with his sort-of answer, contrary to how some of the energy in his voice dissipates slightly as he continues. )

I'm not doing worse than anyone else so, to be honest, I'm more worried about them.

( thinking back on things is actually just making him feel extra responsible. )

It's not so uncommon a sentiment, though, and there are people who would rather the focus be off them— Kazuki is one of these people, so, if both of them will only brush off their thoughts and feelings, there is always a third party to focus on. ]

How are your classmates faring?

[sisters]

( ok cut him some slack, he was unconscious when he started dissolving!! he was kind of fine. )

They're getting by, but I think all of this is starting to wear on them too. The year's going by pretty fast, and we still haven't figured out much that can help us.

( or at least, if they have, they haven't put the pieces together yet. )

[adsum]

[ It's too bad monsters can't smile sadly, but that's fine because I don't have a sad smile icon anyways. He can hear it in Kazuki's voice instead, gentle ]

You are not the first to seek escape, lad. There have been countless in the years before you.

[ ...not to be discouraging or anything. But don't feel like you failed? everybody else failed too ]

( it's a little comforting, it's a little discouraging, but it seems like there might be good intentions behind it. at the very least, it doesn't hurt, so he appreciates the gesture. )

You mentioned something like that before too, but that doesn't mean it's not possible.

( like, RIP to them, but amami's different. )

Hey Kazuki-san, you've been here a while, yeah? Do you remember when it started being this way?

[ Amami, this close to failing finals: i WILL escape ]

I have been here a great number of years, and do not remember each one.

[ like mentioned in somebody's thread i can't remember, but eventually he became wholly spirit more than teacher, and the number of people who could see him, let alone interact with him, dwindled to no more than a handful. Students shifted from one building to another, and he was no longer permitted inside the halls.

He could only watch over the students from outside. ]

...There was a fire, one year, many years ago, that raged throughout the school. After the school was rebuilt, the students were much tenser. Or perhaps it felt that way because I looked more closely at them.

[sisters]

A fire, huh... That checks out.

( it's not like he hasn't noticed — burned up rules, scars left behind by flames, raining ash... there are plenty of hints, and he's suggested as much before. felt they wouldn't have left such an impression on that side if they weren't significant on this one. thinking it over though, a change in the students' behaviour since then? )

( he makes a bit of a face, hand brought up to his chin as the last conversation he had about this comes to mind again. he hadn't thought as much of it at the time, but— )

They changed the rules since then, actually. They used to be the same ones that you had when you taught here, but those ones looked like they'd been burned away, and they're different now. ( a pause, glancing back up to his monster friend. ) What do you think?

[adsum]

Those rules were a warning for my sake. After what happened, I sought help. I was barred from walking the halls any longer, but in exchange, my soul was tempered, and the rules largely became irrelevant for the students who knew not of my existence.

[ He became their friendly(?) neighborhood gardener spirit, or at least one that has a better grip on himself and confines himself to the nighttime hours. ]

What do these new rules say? Who are they warning against?

[sisters]

( it's about in line with what amami had been thinking, so it's nice to hear it from someone else too. the new rules, they must also serve some kind of purpose, isn't that right? luckily he's been paying closer attention to them since finding that older set, so his recall on them is pretty good. )

A lot of them are about, I guess you'd call them personal boundaries.

"Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked," and "When walking in open territory, bother no one." Well, that one is actually only half of the rule though: "If someone bothers you, ask him to stop; if he doesn't, destroy him." And another important one is about acknowledging the power of magic.

[adsum]

[ It goes without saying that most of these rules are broken on a daily basis, thoughtlessly, unintentionally, ignorantly. Imagine if Kazuki or something similar came to eat whoever broke the rules; the game would be so short.

But, as far as anybody can tell, there haven't been consequences for breaking these rules. ... ]

What are your thoughts on them?

[sisters]

( well, he was looking for kazuki's thoughts before saying anything himself, but he guesses he can go on ahead then. )

I mean, if you ask me, I think it seems more like they're meant to protect the students from each other. If they're meant to protect anybody at all, that is.

( don't step on anybody's toes, and you won't get your skull bashed in with a rock or pushed off a cliff or whatever other references i'm forgetting. )
