[ Shiraishi finds himself in 1-C, perhaps a curious window for the black cat to choose, considering the smell of burnt herbs that linger in the air, just in time to see the rear and tail of that little black cat squeezing itself through the gap underneath the classroom door with practiced movements. ]

[ Shiraishi just talks at the door where the cat disappeared, sounding proud of it and in an increasingly good mood at the same time, before dropping in through the window to stand in the classroom. He'll notice the smell of herbs as he walks past the desks, but unless there's a specific place it's coming from that might catch his attention in particular...

You guessed it. He opens the door to keep following the cat, because that's what he's here for. ]

The cat's halfway down the hall when Shiraishi opens the door, quick tap tap taps across the ground like a cat with a purpose, and that purpose is making a beeline for the stairwell and liquifying itself so it can squeeze under that door too. ]

[ Sounds like a pretty casual lifestyle... Shiraishi might feel just a bit envious if he knew, but thankfully if they aren't here right now he can't tell. Maybe later. Imagine being 29 and jealous of some chuuni teens but anyway. ]

[ It's the same as before, a voice that sounds like he's having fun on some level -- if there's anyone in the hallway to hear him talk to himself like a lunatic, rip to them -- but there's also a trace of urgency this time. You know, like when at the same time as being impressed with someone, you're also kind of scrambling to keep up, and he breaks into a jog.

Once he makes it to the stairwell door, he'll open that too and look quickly around, if the cat is still visible. ]

( oh, clamor! mirror is spared, if only for a few minutes. amami uses that hand to wave instead. it looks like the attention shifts to him pretty quickly anyway though so, right, where to begin... )

I probably mentioned it in passing, but when I stayed behind during the binding for Kazuki-san, I was checking on some loose ends. Well, it's more like I was being shown some, in case we ever needed some insurance.

( which is probably about as much as he would have mentioned to anybody else aside from saihara, even if asked, but after a brief pause, he'll elaborate a little more. )

The long and short of it is, one of his other memories showed the day that the wisteria tree in the courtyard was planted. There was something else too, though — a box that Kazuki-san buried next to it with his first graduating class. When I explained to Saihara-kun, he said that we should work together with you.

( and, you know, saihara is the ultimate detective, after all. while hanako might have instructed him something pretty specific, he gets the feeling that working with these two, they might be able to learn more in... a slightly smoother way, to say the least. )

[ The cat isn't visible, but in the isolated stairwell, it's a lot more audible, muffled thumps of something small making its way down the stairs but not quite as practiced as squeezing under doors or running on flat ground.

I have been here a great number of years, and do not remember each one.

[ like mentioned in somebody's thread i can't remember, but eventually he became wholly spirit more than teacher, and the number of people who could see him, let alone interact with him, dwindled to no more than a handful. Students shifted from one building to another, and he was no longer permitted inside the halls.

He could only watch over the students from outside. ]

...There was a fire, one year, many years ago, that raged throughout the school. After the school was rebuilt, the students were much tenser. Or perhaps it felt that way because I looked more closely at them.

[ He had told Komaeda he was more interested in hearing his thoughts and feelings than stated facts, but this— the thinking, the interpreting, the trying to stand in somebody else's shoes even though they pinch— it's good enough.

He lets his eyes slide closed, leaning back to feel the wind pick his bangs off his forehead, and lets himself feel the feelings he had wanted to share as Komaeda talks. The fear and loneliness of the eternal darkness that had become so familiar, the tiniest of lights were blinding and suspicious. Wanting to embrace that warmth and the comfort while warning bells go off in your head screaming wrong wrong wrong until you can't stand it anymore, until you stop reaching out and instead clamp those hands over your ears and find yourself falling. ]

...haha... Even with a dream like this, you're so hopeful, Nagito. A guardian spirit...

( it's not like he hasn't noticed — burned up rules, scars left behind by flames, raining ash... there are plenty of hints, and he's suggested as much before. felt they wouldn't have left such an impression on that side if they weren't significant on this one. thinking it over though, a change in the students' behaviour since then? )

They changed the rules since then, actually. They used to be the same ones that you had when you taught here, but those ones looked like they'd been burned away, and they're different now. ( a pause, glancing back up to his monster friend. ) What do you think?

[ He smiles like a child who's been permitted to play a little longer, and hurries down to follow it with as little commotion as he can, but keeping a polite short distance of a flight of stairs or two. Just enough that he can see (or hear when he can't), but not so close that he'll get too far into the cat's space and startle it.

It seems like he's pretty familiar and practiced at doing that... ]

( it makes him flinch, a little wobbly on the corner of the rooftop as he looks towards rokkun like he's an idiot for that type of talk. komaeda isn't a guardian spirit, but he is hopeful about a lot of things, it's even harder to parse when he doesn't have the emotional capacity to put rokkun's emotion based dream into words.

maybe that's where they have difficulties, if he was by himself, and had no one, maybe if he didn't feel alone already, he could understand the more underlined aspects of it and the comfort. )

Letting yourself to despair would only make me dislike you, and it felt... like a hopeful circumstance...

( thinking about the darkness, he turns away from rokkun now as he sighs softly. )

Most places aren't so dark, but... in your case it started off like that... it must have been different, having no one... so... if I have to think about your experience...

( komaeda's experience is him adding in three other people, voices that stayed with him during the entire thing. that sets apart his mind from one thinking to another, he would mention that having people together in the darkness would be a hopeful endeavor. if he was alone and left to his own thoughts, if this was more of a nightmare than a dream... )

( they sure did lead the gang to a pit that they fell in, so it works... it works. thinking about komaeda is so smart and would understand so much symbolism whereas me is putting away my bible to end his religious era. )
