CHARACTER INFORMATION Name: Leo Tsukinaga Canon: Ensemble Stars!! Canon point: Post-Next Door Age: 19 History:Wiki link, Stories
Personality: One needs the patience of a saint to deal with Leo Tsukinaga.
For one, despite being part of an idol unit (Knights) whose name and image brings to mind a chivalrous order of loyal soldiers to their fans, Leo Tsukinaga's day to day image doesn't quite align with that ideal. He's rather wild, high energy, and incredibly whimsical; his constantly being compared to a child is not an entirely inaccurate description. He tends to focus on things that have his attention at any particular moment in time — whether that’s his composition or an interesting scenario slash person — with a single-mindedness that is hard to pull him out of. Sometimes this is a negative (for example, his underclassman Tsukasa has to constantly struggle to grab his attention while he attempts to speak to Leo when he’s writing a song) and sometimes this is a positive (in Blue Filament, when he desperately tries to apologize to Sora when he thinks he insulted him), but it’s a constant. His laser focus on a subject is usually peppered with loud, almost unintelligible outbursts of love or inspiration, the former being focused more on people and the latter on his composing. Sometimes, he doesn't even remember where he is when his mind strays towards a given thing, engrossed as he is in it. Was he just doing something? Was he talking to someone?
Who are you, person who probably just introduced themselves 5 minutes ago?
Yeah, putting it simply, Leo’s weird. Weird, and direct, and unpredictable… yet none of his ramblings or carefree, shameless declarations ever come across as insincere. That's another part of him that's somewhat like a child — he doesn't seem to be very complicated on the surface, nor does he seem to seek to make things complicated at any point in time. He makes his feelings on most subjects known with blunt, surprisingly sharp words... hell, sometimes he even whines. But he doesn't ever engage in behavior that he doesn't believe in in good conscience, nor does he say things he doesn't mean in an attempt to hurt someone. He's honest to a fault, surprisingly earnest, and a genuine lover of people. He encourages dream following and growing and living, and shoves himself in to help people that need it despite his tendency to come off as flippant and unreliable at times. Generally speaking, he is a good, kind person. Just one with no regard for social standards and sometimes lacking a little tact.
But he is good. And, actually, sometimes pretty wise.
Because despite his outbursts of carefree whatever, he's actually been through a fair bit. His past antics as a genius idol who did what he pleased with a naive outlook to those around him got him and others hurt, and he ended up completely disappearing from school during his second year under the pressure of most everyone he thought of as comrades in his unit actually using him simply for the songs he wrote, and not the person he was. He did what he wanted and thought about nothing but the fun he was having doing what he loved with everyone (and foolishly thought the feeling was returned), ignoring any maliciousness laying beneath the surface... as it simply wasn't there to him. He threw his everything into something that didn't quite pay back, and hurt others in his desperation to fulfill something out of that nothing. In the end, his everything didn't make it through intact.
While it may have been something he's grown past at the time of his canon point, those events are something he refers to consistently, and it also serves at the cornerstone of his development. He despises the fact his first response to hardship was to run away from those he called his friends, his fans; he despises the fact that in his quest to fulfill his one dear friend (and his own) dreams, he crushed the dreams of everyone who stood opposite to them; and, most of all, he despises the fact that, upon breaking, he brought down the people he loved with him. It's why he tries so hard to do all he can to support those that he treasures at this moment. He's gone from being a sharp sword to something more like a sturdy shield -- opting to do everything he can to support others, rather than hurt them. This... probably isn't entirely healthy either (given how easily he says that no matter what someone he loves does to him, he'll still love them), but it seems like he's something he's more okay with. And with his endless kindness and love, it's not surprising that this role is what he's come to accept.
Leo may not always act as serious as one might imagine a knight to be, but he does embody some of the traits of his unit's namesake. His previously mentioned kindness. Some form of courage and perseverance, to keep to the path he ran away from. A devout faith in his comrades, who he'll always look out for (even if his way of teaching might be a bit harsh and clumsy at times). So, yes, one needs the patience of a saint to deal with Leo Tsukinaga... but they'll be rewarded with a loyal friend who'll seek to help them out when he can.
He just draws on the walls sometimes. Sorry.
Powers/abilities: He's a regular human! Regular in the anime idol school sense of the world. He's got a number of miscellaneous skills like archery, bird calling, and skillful anime idol school tree climbing. He's physically fit as a result of his occupation, and is also quite gifted at dancing and singing because of it as well. His most notable talent is his ability to compose music, which is described as a genius gift and god-given talent.
Questions:
✽ What does your character consider to be their top three strengths?
His genius is not entirely useful outside of a musical context, but that's definitely something he'd cite as a strength... No, really, he does tout that fact around a fair bit to the point that it's a little bit arrogant sounding. Outside of that, his stubbornness (which is absolutely in a hilarious way, since that's a cause of frustration for others too) that's allowed him to return from the brink of death, and his capacity to care for others that's stemmed from that too.
✽ What do others consider to be your character's greatest weakness?
Sorry, let me take out the long list of complaints everyone's submitted to Google about Leo Tsukinaga-- but no, the main thing would likely be his slightly flighty nature that gets him into unfortunate situations, or his tendency to allow himself to so easily be used by others that, again, gets him into unfortunate situations. It's why his one of his friends literally has to sign himself up to be his babysitt... Ah, I'm sorry, his manager.
✽ What are your character's three greatest fears?
Being abandoned and alone, as he's felt that before (even if he wraps it up entirely as it being his fault); hurting others in his obsessive quest for something, as he's also done in the past; disappointing those he loves.
✽ What would your character choose for a last meal?
Something his best friend Sena cooked (puke). But, honestly, it probably wouldn't even be food -- just a cup of coffee or two so he could push out his last masterpiece, an actual Requiem this time. Even though he's written fifty for his fifty spiritual-not-actual-deaths... Ensemble Stars makes me tired.
✽ Has your character ever killed? If so, how did that affect them? If not, how would it affect them?
Me...taphorically speaking, he has. And honestly, even though it's not been directly said, he's probably pushed others at least close to their death just by virtue of being the guy who crushed a bunch of people's dreams and songs in order to reach the top. That was enough to affect him very deeply (to the point of leaving him locked in his room for ages), psychologically speaking, so needless to say any actual murder would wreck him a fair bit. When I say he's resolved himself to never hurting someone else intentionally, I mean it.
✽ If your character was given one selfish wish (eg. must be applied to themselves and not affect others), what would it be?
This is actually... a difficult question, with how "for others" Leo's mindset is now. His most selfish, heartfelt wish would likely be to ease whatever hurt he made other people go through in the past... I say this is selfish because it's something he'd view as ultimately just easing his own self-conscience, as it doesn't erase the fact that he did hurt people. I can also say he'd go with something absolutely stupid like a pen that never runs out of ink or something like that because he'd get frustrated thinking of a selfish wish, honestly, that's just Leo Tsukinaga.
